Every culture has its bling festival at some point in the year. Already there are Halloween decorations appearing and up - lot of plastic, nothing apparently re-usable. Going to be a lot of problematic waste there.
The traditional Christmas party is well on the horizon with craft fairs poring out of every Facebook corner (and probably other online chat areas) and in the newspapers that no-one buys, telly adverts and what have you).
What do the crafters do with left overs? Or the Halloween non sold ghosts and ghouls? I know one small card shop locally that is selling off last years Christmas card boxes reduced. There goes I tomorrow.
On another forum I'm on, one of the winders up who works in a garden centre asked if their cut out grim reaper for Halloween had undergone appropriate health and safety training for the care and use of his scythe. Oh and surely he'd have had to be trained as he'd probably upgraded to a strimmer for his gardening work. I gather he got a dusty reply as he was sent back to work. Did laugh at the detrimental remarks on the stock.
And now we are on the long run up to Christmas. I've never seen so many requests for stock to sell at "Christmas Fairs/Sales" on Facebook. Not all for chairty either.
Oh and clearing out of last year's toys - but this year people are charging if they can possibly get away with it.
Some of this years boards will be from a walnut tree my mum grew from seed, the new owner wanted the tree gone so we had it felled. One day I'll make some furniture for our bedroom out of it.
Just one of the millions of things I'd have thought myself incapable of till I saw all the stuff that other Downsizers do. This place has probably had more impact on me than almost anything else, plus the fun we used to have...
That is really special Tahir. Will make some lovely furniture and will also make really nice chopping boards. You have been busy and all for a good cause.
I have to make up something for a raffle prize for next week's Trefoil meeting. I think it is to pay for a speaker. I gave them a demonstration on besom making last time which went down well. Your produce has given me an idea; I still have some quinces, so might make some more quince jelly and give a couple of pots of that for a prize.
