I haven't been in that part of the woods for over a week, but there was no sign of one elder near the hedge we replanted showing any signs then. I hope to be able to get out there some time this week. The quince in the garden is showing green in the buds, but hasn't moved much in the past week.
Well spring is well and truly springing here at the moment. Went out into the main part of the wood today and heard a nut hatch, wren, crow and several unidentified, probably tits of some sort.
Wild garlic and bluebells are coming up well, but for some reason I couldn't smell the wild garlic. Either there is something wrong with my sense of smell, or it has been so wet it has rather diluted the scent. Very muddy, but sun and mild, so lovely to be in the woods today.
cutting hedges before the start of the nesting season here - well tis a bit late now as the hedge rows have been alive with action for the last couple of weeks.

Yes Florence, have to be careful about hedge cutting even out of season. The weather here today is sunny and quite warm. I walked down to the shops this afternoon and found a good number of clumps of what I think are sweet violets in the grass at the end of a road. I wasn't going to go down on hands and knees to check as it was a. muddy, b. I might not have been able to get up again, and c. I would have looked rather silly. Primroses flowering well in our lawn now and we have a couple of snowdrops and some tiny daffodils coming into flower in the trough I planted earlier in the year.
I forgot to say yesterday that we heard a nuthatch and a wren in the wood. Other birds too, but interesting we have nuthatches.

Yesterday the weather was lovely and saw 3 brimstones as we went into the wood. Today, the weather was cooler, and rain started late morning. We were cutting birch but we had to give up as it was just too wet. We can't bundle wet birch as it will rot, so will have to try to dry it out a bit before bundling. The problem is that some of it is coming into leaf, so must be kept in subdued light or it will leaf up and go brittle, so not be of any use.
Got out into the main part of the wood today and had a look round as we had a man from the Forestry Commission with us to look at the potential need for deer management. Found some early violets, the odd bluebell coming up to flower, primroses, a few wood anemones and some toothwort. Heard several wrens, a tit of some sort, robin and saw a buzzard flying through the trees.
