If I can't afford it, I can't afford the interest on the credit card either.

A useful thought when budgeting. Been there, done that and survived. Do we teach youngsters at school enough about budgeting. Do the teachers have the knowledge? There was an economics class at the school for the two youngest and the training was how to apply for jobseekers allowance and such. Not how to manage gas, electricity, rent, food if you worked.

Last school I went to had no idea about the breadline. It was a state grammar school with ideas above its state. it cost the parents. Didn't help me with everyday living - housing, food, rent, mortgage, bills.

a lack of understanding of financial matters, large and small, makes the serfs easier to control and exploit.

I have no idea if it is taught in schools these days, but it needs to be. Because we have always lived within our income, we were able to ride 2 crises; one when I went off long term sick and my pay halved, then when husband was made redundant. There have been difficult times, mainly to do with new mortgages, but we have managed thank goodness.

To some extent it is something children learn from their parents. If the parents are always spending beyond their means, then the children don't have a good example to follow.

I didn't learn about it at school either. I went to a good grammar school, and we did learn some life skills there, as well as discussing various topics from the wider world so we got a good general education as well as an academic one.
