When I were new to desktop computers (needed one for the company desk for word purposes), there was a choice of software.
Slowly but surely over the years the not commercial stuff from the major companies has disappeared. Admittedly there's a choice of browser and email client whatever Microsoft would have you believe), but where have all the oddballs gone.
The Open University has stopped updating OpenOffice (though Libre Office is still alive and well). A lot of photo software has disappeared. Microsoft is dropping long standing bits and pieces.
Or am I just the person who skedaddled off to Netscape as a protest as soon as the computer was up and running and have continued in that line of thinking ever since. Trouble is I don't have the technical skills (or ability to learn coding) to continue the line of protest.
You know it is as someone who ran his own business but was a bit of a techie on the side said, time was when odd balls designed something that was useful for their work and then dropped it on the internet in case someone else could use it.
One such: I've a little desktop calendar that sits in a corner and comes up when I open up the computer with all the events for the coming days (even months in advance). Used to be a freebie but has progressed to being licenced but so far free. But a widget that beats the Microsoft offering.
Another such: Thunderbird has had a recent kicking, technical overhaul and now ranks as professional but free for email. Don't really like having a calendar tied in - prefer having a standalone. Don't always want to worry about email now I'm free of voluntary stuff and can just faff on to please meself. It's mostly for notification of upcoming bills, online shopping ...
Now if anyone knows a cheap or free photo editing programme that doesn't go round the houses - these used to be plentiful but haven't been updated to deal with changing desktops unless they are all on linux offerings.

Seconding Linux ( just 7 years behind you and definitely not a Computer Person except where there is no choice)
Can't afford a linux computer - this windows one is far too new for me to replace it. Whatever I have has to work on windows. What I'm looking for is cheap, effective photo editing programme to run on windows. Not a new operating system like Linux.

You can add Linux as well to the computer. Run both then decide which suits you best
Not keen on running two systems on one computer. All I was hoping for was someone who knew of a free photo editing programme on windows. Honest
Which I may have found.
I appreciate the people who use Linux and find it excellent. But I'm not in root and branch change. Maybe next time I have to replace a computer. But not today. Or tomorrow. Or next week.
Well in a ferret on what runs on Linux, I came up with a couple of freebie photo editing programmes that I'd forgotten about that run on Windows at no cost to me as well as Linux.
