They are starting to introduce food waste bins in our area, probably towards the end of September, as we will be getting the caddies and bins over the next few week. At present I have one container for plastic bottles, as they take up a lot of room, even flattened, one for card, smaller plastic bottles and paper, one for soft plastic, which is the only sort that can be dealt with in our area, and waste. We also get kerbside recycling of glass bottles. I have to take the soft plastic to a shop for recycling though as there is no collection. Sadly there is nothing for hard plastic like fruit punnets, so they have to go in the bin. Periodically I take empty pharmaceutical blister packs and aluminium foil to a place that will recycle them, but I do tend to collect rather a lot of the blister packs.

Some people just won't bother I know, but I would like to recycle as much as possible, and am quite willing to sort it.

Judging by the way some people just throw waste out of car windows or leave the remains of a picnic lying around, most people are just too lazy to bother though.

But what is this food waste? I'm vegan so don't have bons and such. Peelings go in the garden waste bin as they are compostable.

It's going to be the getting the head around the recycling that is going to hurt me. Will be glad of tetra paks to go though as vegan milk comes in those.

Tea bags, even herbal ones, not sure what else you will have though. I don't think they will get a lot from us either because I put peelings on the compost heap along with coffee grounds and everything other than bad bits of potato and bones. I might put the tea bags in there as fishing the remains of the stuff they use to hold them together from the compost is a bit of a pain.

I've just looked in the general waste collection for next Tuesday. I have a small, single householder bin and it's often only ever worth putting it out as the next door neighbour puts his in as well. He did once put his (single householder) bin out after he had a clear out. We were both surprised.

Do you remember the days when the internet had plenty of people attempting to live with zero waste? It was certainly a thing about 10- 15 years ago.

Yes. Rather tricky though. I reuse or recycle as much as I can, but I still end up with a small pedal bin of rubbish every couple of weeks. I might have a little less when we get the food bin, but not much. Unfortunately most of the rubbish is hard plastic that we can't recycle round here.

Will have to check the state of the clothes banks locally. Bit since they were all closed due to lack of contract to empty them.

Have a selection of elasticated waist trousers where the elastic has stretched to the point of them falling down. So not a lot of use to the charity shop. Also too long. And some deranged from dealing with the rambling rose at the front door.

It seems that the only way to get rid of trash clothes that are not fit for the charity shop is a visit to the local tip. Which is not a walk in. The next door neighbour is far too poorly to do such things at present. There is another neighbour who might just help but she too is up for a cataract operation so will be out of action for weeks.

Can you change the elastic in the trousers? That way you could wear them again. It is sometimes a bit of a pain to put elastic into things like that, but quite possible, even if it means sewing through elastic.

A lot of clothes banks are closing for unusable clothes as the price for used cloth has dropped for some reason.

The trousers have stretchy tops not ones where you can thread through. Pain to even consider repairing.

And yes the clothes banks locally for unusable clothing have disappeared. County Council has said it has lost whoever emptied them and is looking to see what can be done. Meantime put it in your general rubbish.

It is awkward. It might be possible to sew some thick elastic on the inside of the waistband to get the right size.

I have a duvet and matching pillow cases that have worn out along the seams. The rest of the cloth seems all right, but I would have to take too much off just to resew them, so not really sure what to do with them.

You're beginning to sound like one of the neighbours who collects carpet sweepers but doesn't throw them if they break or she can't get another battery to fit.

Nor me neither.

When one of the husband's elderly aunts died, he bought all the sheets turned sides to middle for the single bed. Hey ho, had to deal with that when he wasn't looking

I once slept on a single sheet that had been sides to middled, and I wouldn't want to repeat the experience. Might be all right with a thinnish cotton sheet, but seem to remember that was a thick one; it was nealy 70 years ago though, which shows the impression it made.
