How about a no spend year?
Tough as you want it to be. Could be a right bummer if a lot of people set really tough standards, lived on what they owned.
An interesting article.
I tend to be a non-buyer by nature. I do make occasional impulse purchases; some turn out to be really good, and others not so. Generally through things like clothes I buy to last and make some myself. I gave some of the home made ones to our great nieces a few years ago that dated to the 1960s; I just didn't feel mini skirts were quite my thing at about 70.
You're being boring MR. Fancy thick tights, good stylish shoes and mini skirts could be for the 70s.
I think that the article is for those who are of a sudden seriously going into not spending for various reasons - big time changes of spending habits rather than the everyday frugal.
But I am boring Florence!! My family keep telling me I am when I won't let them buy things or point out the flaw in their argument. Mini skirts just aren't for me now, even with thick tights. When I am at work I am usually wearing trousers, but do like to wear a skirt otherwise as I feel more comfortable. I also don't bother with stylish shoes, but prefer comfort. I think I have always been boring at heart!
Digging into the people who actually kept a record of what happened in their no-spend year was interesting.
Some gave up because they didn't know what to do with the time that they suddenly had spare. Or they found that they didn't have the backup of spares (i.e. not an over supply of socks and those that they had were fairly threadbare after a short time, similar with shoes ..) But boredom as a a result of not going shopping? Fair enough.
Others found that they had an oversupply of stuff that allowed them to not go shopping and save. In one case even 6 months backlog of soap, shampoo, unopened makeup?
One had a shopping list - new double bed, rug but nothing much else. That must have been easy as he was working and there was a new baby that had enough to be going on with and they didn't need to go round family to fill in the gaps.
